It isn’t as easy as attaching the house to the sewer. The slope of the drain is crucial. Too little of a slope and the water won’t move and carry solid waste away. Existing homes may need to have the sewer service upgraded or repaired. Old cast iron piping under basement floors builds up mineral deposits over time and can require replacement. Many older homes used clay pipe from the house to the street. They can collapse or clog with tree roots. Sometimes a new smaller diameter PVC pipe can be sleeved inside of the old pipe to restore performance. Other times a trench will have to be dug to replace the pipe.
